Antique, c1850s/60s, Civil War era ninth plate ruby ambrotype on ruby red glass depicting a rare view of an American Tar (Navy Sailor) in full work uniform. A brilliant image with the sailor posing with his 1850s era hat; and when examined closely one can just make out his black neckerchief tied around his neck as well as buttons going up his shirt. Protected behind glass in a brass mat and preserver and housed in a leatherette case. In Good/As Found overall condition.
The plate exhibits some green spotting which I believe is a form of mold. This is on the glass plate and not on the underside of the cover glass.A crisp image still thst displays nicely. Mat and preserver are clean.
Case is clean but split in two at the hinge; hook and latch are fully functional. Provenance comes for a collection of images originating from a southern Vermont area estate.
Ninth plate measures just under the standard size coming in at 2 1/4 x 2. Case measures 3 x 2 1/2 x 3/4 thick. Please enjoy the photos for further item details and if you have any questions feel free to ask. Thank you and be sure to check out our other listings!
