AMERICAN EAGLE HEADED MOUNTED OFFICERS SABER, MEXICAN & CIVIL WARS. This very fine quality early 1800s American eagle headed 5-ball hilt saber was used in the Mexican & Civil Wars by the Boyd family of Maryland. It is 33 ¾ long with a 28 ½ engraved blade that has very faint engraving with laurel branches & leaves, a stand of arms with spears & lances with flags on both sides. The brass 5 ball guard has 5 balls on the lower arm & on the right side arm, an eagle headed pommel cap & white bone grip. The scabbard is black leather with a brass throat, band with a brass ring & tip.The sword is in good condition with the blade having light pits here & there & is still dully shiny with the engraving faint but can still be seen. The bone grip is in very good condition without any cracks or chips. This saber was used in the Mexican War by Private & Captain James Boyd who served in Lieutenant Colonel William H. Watsons Battalion, Maryland & District of Columbia Regiment Volunteers & Maryland & District of Columbia Independent Volunteers. It was later used in the Civil War by Captain & Lieutenant Colonel Robert Boyd when he commanded Boyds Company, District of Volunteers, 1. Regiment District of Columbia Infantry & 2. Regiment District of Columbia Infantry.
He fought at the Battles of Harpers Ferry, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Cedar Mountain, Popes Virginia Campaign, Bull Run & at Fort Stevens in Washington D. Fought on July 11-123, 1864.
