This is a nice Collins & Co bowie knife in good condition. The total length is 16 5/8 inches long with a blade 11 7/8 inches long. The blade is marked, although partially faded, LEGITIMUS / COLLINS & CO / HARTFORD / No. 18 and the Collins logo; the number 18 is no longer visible (see picture 11).
The blade has been sharpened. This Collins knife has the fancy and rare corrugated leather handle with brass cross guard and pommel.
There are some old marks made on the leather part of the handle probably to improve the rip. The cross guard and pommel have a little bit of movement. The knife comes with an unmarked leather sheath that fits perfectly and is in good condition.I don't know the exact age of this knife but according to the book "Collins Machetes and Bowies" similar knifes were produce during the Civil War, Spanish American War, and until the years pre WW2. Please look at the pictures carefully for details and let me know if you have any questions.
