Although the date stamp is faint, it clearly reads 1846. The balance of markings available indicate this is indeed an Ames Cabotville manufactured piece. The Blade is in good condition with the patina expected for this original period piece. The Grip and guard also are in excellent condition and there is no play or looseness in this piece. The guard and grip still retains much of its original luster/guiding. The Cutlass contains many rack stamps as you would expect from an original Navy service item. The model is positively identified in Harold L. Peterson's Book, The American Sword (page 52 and 53). If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. This has been a part of my collection for years and I believe an excellent addition to anyone serious about collecting and displaying original militaria pieces.
