Dimensions: approximately 7 1/4" diameter x 2 1/16" thick. Wood may be cedar, difficult to identify.
Strap is a post-war, but fairly old - initials on strap read A. All three sling guides are present.
As is typical, the staves upon which the sling guides rest are slightly grooved to allow the guides to slip beneath the hoops. If someone were careful, a presentable new stave could be fabricated and inserted, but it looks good without it. Despite the missing stave, the remaining staves are tight. A thin piece of dark greenish sheet metal has been affixed to the top by two small iron mails, with a rough hole made for use. Whether this sheet metal is period or not is difficult to tell.Iron furniture is rusted, as is fairly normal. One face is carved with a period "JH" in capitols; below is a series of cruder letters, including a PH. The rear face has a split, which is common. Cork depicted goes to another canteen and will not be included, but I will include the one that came with it, which does not appear to be of the era. This is an honest Rebel canteen with provenance to an estate sale in Appomattox County, VA.
