Civil War Silver KW Pocket Watch. American Eagle/ Shield Front& Sail Ship Back
Wonderful example of a running Civil War Silver key wind key set all from the rear full hunting case pocket watch made in Europe by Thomas F. Cooper of London, England for the American military market. American Eagle on an American shield is engraved on the front cover while on the back cover is a sailing vessel under full sail. Movement is quite large by American standards.....

18 to 20 size was usual for this period..... The movement measures a full 22 Lignes (50 mm or approximately 22 size)! Engraved on the inner dust cover is Patent Lever, Full Jeweled, No 3524 T. Being "fully jeweled" implies a 15 jewel movement which was considered excellent quality for this time period.

Front and back cover show some wear. I tested the outer covers for silver.... 800 silver and I guarantee them to be so. Inner dust cover is silver plated brass and has a crescent of brass showing.

The lifter spring opens the front cover OK but the lifter spring push button release works on the hard side...... I use my thumb nail to push the button. The dial is excellent except for a small edge chip at 1:00 which is mostly covered by the bezel ring.

Has an original period key with some minor rust that came with the watch when I bought it out of an old Burlington family estate sale about 35 years ago. I serviced the watch and put it away in my own collection at that time..... It's been there ever since. Please note that I did not clean or polish the silver case.... I like to keep my items in an "as found" state with the exception that I cleaned and oiled the movement to put it back into a serviceable working condition.
