Chas Stadden (1919 - 2002) American Civil War Chess Set. A limited edition custom military chess set as follows: A complete set of 32 hand-painted pewter pieces representing figures from the American Civil War. Recognizable pieces include Abraham Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Custer, McClellan, Jefferson Davis, Lee, Jackson, Longstreet and Stuart. The pawns are of members of the 2nd Wisconsin Iron Brigade and the Wheats Louisiana Tigers.

All pieces are set on marble bases with the Chas Stadden emblem on the bottom. Individual pieces range in size from. The pieces are set into custom-cut green foam with a green cut-out felt overlay, the whole encased in a rectangular mahogany box. The box is brass-clad at the corners and has a brass plate at the center top, engraved as follows: "THE MILITARY CHESS SET OF THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES CIRCA 1863". Another brass plate is affixed to the front of the box and reads, "THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES / A MILITARY CHESS SET MADE TO THE ORDER OF / [this line blank] / NO [blank] IN AN EDITION OF 1000".

The box is closed with two brass clasps at either side and has inset brass handles. Inch deep and 5 inches high. Stadden (1919 - 2002) became internationally known for his intricately designed and painted military figurines. Although most well-known for military subjects, he produced many other pieces for the toy and gift trades including sculptures of film and pop stars.

He also authored and illustrated several books on military history. The world-famous Stadden Studios, which were based in Twickenham in the UK, are now closed, making his military figures highly collectible and sought after. His military figurines are intricately detailed and carefully researched in both the uniforms and the badges.
