A fine example of original American Civil War Unionist Officer Epaulettes to a member of the Vermont Militia. The Militia was also known as'Green Mountain Boys'.

Whether this was because their uniform was green, it is unsure, however the epaulettes were originally dark blue and period covered in green cloth. The British Rifle companies of the Napoleonic Wars had so impressed the Americans that they emulated their green uniforms. There are some wear marks, which show the blue underneath. The buttons are gilded and have the head of stag and VERMONT with 13 stars. The tassels are of a buff colour. Condition is good showing no excessive wear for an item of this age. The Vermont Militia served with the North during the Civil War and took part in the Battles of Antietam, 1st and 2nd Bull Run, and Gettysburg. Size (each): 20 x 13.5 x 9 cm (8 x 5 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches) Weight: 370 g.
