As a result, between 1891 and 1897, more than 500 Medals of Honor were awarded for actions during the Civil War. Furthermore, organizational badges and veteran service medals that resembled the Medal of Honor were developed, most significantly by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR).The GAR was a fraternal and political organization of veterans from the Civil War.
