Two gilt etched portraits adorn the reverse-face bevel, depicting Italian General Giuseppe Garibaldi and King Victor Emmanuel II. Both men were instrumental in the Wars of Italian Unification leading to the formation of the Kingdom of Italy in March of 1861.
The reverse face of the blade is marked G. Wostenholm & Son / Washington Works / None Are Genuine But Those / Marked IXL on the ricasso and stamped on the flat with G. Wostenholm & Son, an American eagle, the famous IXL brand and The Real IXL Knife in riband.
The hilt comprises a German silver guard, a coffin handle with pinned stag grips and a German silver escutcheon plate on the reverse face. The included German silver-mounted scabbard is embossed with gilt decorations including the IXL legend and rates fine with some cloudiness and hints of verdigris on the mounts and some very light surface wear of the gilt. Blade retains most of the original bright factory polish with some scattered minor surface scuffs and scratches and some flecks of surface oxidation. The gilt panel remains almost entirely intact and all markings remain completely legible. Grips fine, scabbard near fine, with some light scuffing and minor loss to the embossed gilt decorations.
