Antique 29 Star Pre Civil War US American Parade Flag
Offered is a beautiful 29 star American parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton. Flag retains it's original stick. The stars are arranged in a double wreath pattern with a large center star and 4 flanking corner stars. This early flag has a distinct folk art quality. Printing on what we would call the reverse was not unusual in 1846 when flag laws and culture were much different from today. The flag displays as shown in the main photo which makes this flag even more unique and pleases with early Americana charm. The reverse of the flag is lighter in color and retains a signature as shown. The 29th state, Iowa, entered the Union on December 28th, 1846. The only president to serve under this flag was James Polk. This was a time of great significance as the United States was at war with Mexico and pioneering spirit drove westward expansion.

Flags made prior to the Civil War comprise less than one percent of 19th century flags that have survived into the 21st century making this flag a rare find sought by the advanced collector. The flag measures 7"X10" and is in very good to excellent condition. The stick measures 18 in length and displays an early complete break at the base of the stick as shown.
