Antique 13 Star Nautical US American Flag Late Civil War Era
This stunning late Civil War Era 13 star nautical flag in the 3-2-3-2-3 pattern measures approximately 4'X8'. Cotton stars are whip-stitched on both sides of the wool bunting canton as well as hand-stitching on the hoist end of the canton itself. Stripes are pieced with treadle stitching. Hand and treadle stitching date this flag from mid 1800's to 1870's. Whip-stitched eyelets on the hoist suggest that this flag is earlier. This is an impressive flag. Colors are deep and vibrant. Hand stitching creates a beautiful folk art display found only in early craftsmanship. Stenciled EE Truesdell on both sides of the Canton. Truesdell was the Superintendent of the Webster, Pembroke and China Mills company in Suncook, New Hampshire from 1870 to 1885. Provenance: Found in the attic of a house at the end of Delano's stone warf on Kingston Bay, Kingston, Massachusetts.
