This antique saber is a derivative of the British 1821 light cavalry saber which was imported for use in the American Civil War. The saber and its matching scabbard were produce by the well known English swordmaker Sargant. This sword is in remarkably good condition for its age. The blade, hilt, and scabbard are quite clean and all of the components are solid.
Some mentionable flaws from its aging include: some minor corrosion on the last third of the blade, some minor drying of the leather grip, and some dents and patina on the scabbard. The blade is a "Wilkonson style" meaning it is single edged and fullered for the first two thirds, before becoming double edged for the last third. The blade is 35 inches in length. The hilt is made of brass and consists of a knucklebow and two large bars on the right side and one small bar on the left side. This is a very unique and rare sword that carries with it interesting aspects of both American and British military history.
It handles deftly for a cavalry saber and looks great to boot.
