Gemrig was a major supplier of surgical sets and instruments to the U. Army during the Civil War.
It does show age, as this is a very old piece. This case has a beautiful pattern I just loved on both sides. Look like victorian flower pattern. It has purple red velvet liner in side, has some stain. It's hard to find this kind of field kit with flip out turtle shell Scalpel. This is first form of a scalpel that was used before you just to go to the barber, who used straight razor. This kit has name on them plus one blood letting tool.
There is a tube that twists off and has a pointed needle. The lock is cute and so small. Just a twist of lock and it holds case in place. Just extra piece make feel of the time.
In the case extra find a stitching needle with small piece of thread on the end. Piece of paper with nothing but has stain maybe rust or blood. Piece of the case came off could be glued in again it has a stain? I feel it been used in the field. Back in the day would be lucky for person that would know how to used this set.Who knows what this kit been through in the civil war or how many lives been saved using this kit. Size: Case 13 Inches Long, 10 inches Tall folded out.
Condition: Overall this piece has damage but is in fair condition. Case slightly smells old and folding scalpel have damage. Case is pulling a part in Two spot. This Piece has damage, smell old, rust and holes. Shows a lot of age from used. Interesting, being a Civil war time could be a field kit what it has been through. Made of folding scalpel are in bad shape on one side.
Even some parts missing a handle. In a show case you can show the better side of tools looks less damage. Picture are the best way to show damage, please take a look. Up to you asked questions or for more pictures if needed.
One folding blade doesn't have a name on it. Please looked for names with pictures zoom in. Tools with names on them: Please, look at picture for names.
