This is a rare American forged guardless coffin hilt Bowie/frontier fighting knife. I saw it for sale and remembered an article about it in an old Antique Bowie Knife Association Journal from 2008. Wayne McNeese discovered the knife at a small town flea market in Virginia in the 1990's. I'll let you read the article for the full details. The pictures in the gallery should be good enough to see everything. The condition is as found. Blade thickness is a little over 1/8. Blade is 11 inches long and 1-3/4" wide, 14-1/2" overall. If you ever wanted an authentic American made guardless coffin hilt Bowie this is a good opportunity to get one without having to pay through the nose.
The heavy, fully forged blade is rusty but overall the knife is as solid as a brick out house. I don't know if it would be wise to try to remove the rust, it seems to be very stable and will probably look the same another 50 years down the road. It has all the early features of the 1830's period coffin knives as described by Wayne in the article but he can't be sure if it's that old. I listed it in the category of Civil War edged weapons but I'm sure it's earlier. The item "American Antique Guardless Coffin Hilt Bowie/Fighting knife 1830's 1860's" is in sale since Wednesday, January 2, 2019.
