This knife is a typical American blacksmith? Forged Bowie/frontier fighting knife and a very likely a Civil War used Bowie.
The heavy, double edged blade is 13-1/2 long and the pattern is similar to the artillery short swords of the 1830's. It is ruggedly constructed and lacks the fine finish of the later mass-produced Bowie. It is fitted with a one piece round stag grip, a large brass cross guard with S-curved quillions and a large "1836" dated Liberty coin for a butt cap which could represent the year it was made. It's housed in it's original leather sheath with large belt loop. It's a very large, good strong Bowie knife and shows honest wear from use on blade and on scabbard.
