15k Gold Civil War Belt Sash Buckle Engraved Union American Flag Eagle Liberty

Antique 15k Gold Belt Buckle engraved with Union, American Flag, Eagle & Lady Justice and Lady Liberty. This design can be attributed to William U.

Boehm of San Francisco, California, who was granted a patent by the US government on 27 Jan 1863 for inventing a new and useful improvement in the manufacture of buckles for ladies waist belts (US patent number 37489). Buckles of this type made after 1863 would bear the patent number, while those made between 1861-62 were either unmarked or struck with a patent applied for mark. According to The Railway Splitter: A Journal for the Lincoln Collector, these civil war era gold buckles were made for affluent women wishing to publicly signal their support for the Union cause.

Like others made by Boehm, the present buckle is chased and engraved with an American bald eagle over a UNION banner, with Lady Justice and Lady Liberty dominating the center left and right, a grizzly bear (Californias state animal) resting at the feet of Lady Justice, and two stars and stripes American flags (also the Union flag during the Civil War) flanking a shield intended for initials. As part of the Compromise of 1850, California was admitted to the Union as a slavery-prohibited free state. When civil war broke out in 1861, California was unable to send full military regiments eastward to officially serve in the Union war effort, in part due to its significant distance from the threats of war, and in part due to a large contingent of pro-Confederate sympathizers within the state. Within a state of divided sympathies, emblems such as the present belt buckle would have been worn as an outward declaration of pro-Union support.

Total weight: 19.28 grams. Please examine all photographs, they are part of the description.
